Brief CV

Nicola Spooner is a founding partner of Citrus Partners LLP and a Senior Associate of CMAL with 18 years in the environment sector. Nicola is a leading practitioner in the application of environmental management tools to industrial projects, including Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA), alternatives analysis and the development of Environmental Management Systems. She has supported a range of clients in the development of ‘road maps’ for environmental permitting and in the use of management tools to assess and minimise environmental risk. Nicola is also highly experienced in environmental due diligence. To date, Nicola has undertaken and/or directed over 150 due diligence programmes for private and public sector clients including Tyco (Kendal Healthcare), GE, Lafarge Gypsum, Imerys, SKF, Alstom, IFC, EBRD, ArcelorMittal and US Steel. In particular, Nicola has helped a number of clients to develop management tools for the approach of portfolio-based and multi-site issues together with issue-based reporting. For industrial clients, this has included site audit protocols, compliance assessment, environmental monitoring procedures and specific plans for dealing with environmental emergencies and incident reporting. She has worked extensively on ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 training and pre-certification assessment. Nicola has an MSc in Land Resources Management from the Cranfield Institute of Technology and a BA in Geography from Nottingham University. Key natural resources assignments include: ▪ Environmental due diligence of 15 coal mines with associated methane drainage and mine water issues, Karaganda, Kazakhstan on behalf of IFC and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. ▪ Project Director for the preparation of the EIA and public consultation and disclosure plan for the Caldag nickel project in Turkey, for European Nickel. ▪ Project Direction of the EIA for the Lajjun Oil Shale Development Project, Jordan. The EIA was prepared to meet Government of Jordan standards together with IFC Performance Standards and the Equator Principles. ▪ Preparation of lender package for the Environmental Assessment of the Bisha open pit gold mine, Eritrea; Nicola has worked with an international and local team to bring the SEIA up to full international standards and to develop a set of social and environmental management plans to control construction and operational impacts. Phase II of the development will involve an upgrade of the road to the port and port handling facilities for the copper phase of the project. ▪ As part of a global facilities audit programme for Firmenich, Nicola has conducted ISO14001 and OHSAS18001 assessments at sites in Europe and Latin America; ▪ Consultant for the preparation of best practice environmental guidelines for open pit and deep mining in Romania, for NAMR, Romania. ▪ Lead Consultant for the environmental due diligence of 15 underground coal mines in Karaganda, northern Kazakhstan for IFC, JP Morgan and EBRD.
