Mr. Robert (Bob) Bell

  • Forename: Robert
  • Surname: Bell
  • Primary Position: Executive Search Consultant
  • Secondary Position: HR Strategy & Organisation Adviser/Executive Mentor

Brief CV

After graduation, Bob joined Shell International where he carried out two overseas postings in Asia/Australasia before joining the American corporation, Engelhard Minerals and Chemicals, where he was responsible for the worldwide sale of precious metal catalyst to the petroleum, petrochemical and fertilizer industries. Towards the end of the Seventies, his interest in aviation lured him to mainland Europe to take up the sales responsibility for Cessna Aircraft’s EMEA region. A desire to experience the challenge and excitement of a start-up operation led to the creation in 1983 of the New View Group with offices in Brussels, Lausanne and London, dealing with logistics design, project and supply chain management (ERP) for large organizations in the Primary Industries sector. In 1999, the opportunity to sell New View’s client list arose and, having acquired the mind set of both ‘client’ and ‘contractor’, he joined Boyden Executive Global Search as a Partner. Initially, working as a generalist in the Brussels office, he joined the Paris office in 2001 as Senior VP. In 2002, he set up and operated a global business, specialising in the energy, metals & minerals and bulk chemicals sectors. In order to bring more ‘added value’ to his offering, in April 2005, he left Boyden to create an independent practice dedicated to the Primary Industries. No longer being obliged to perform business in a transactional mode or having to support the high overheads of an integrated firm, he is now able to invest more time in understanding his clients’ ambitions and needs. This is manifest in the ability to become involved in management assessment, succession planning, new staff integration programmes and retention schemes as well as his core skill of commercial and technical ‘search & selection’. Having lived and worked on all five Continents, both in the role of expatriate and ‘local staff’, Bob has amassed a truly international network which he maintains by frequent travel. Thus, in addition to gauging intellectual and emotional qualities in his candidates, he is well equipped to empathise with those who are considering relocation and cultural change. He also has a keen interest in diversity which impacts on the subject of gender recruitment. He has adopted a holistic approach and is able to invest time in understanding his clients’ objectives and challenges (e.g. post-merger integration) by interfacing with senior management, contributing his not-insignificant experience, utilising his innovative style and ultimately attracting talent.
